User profile for user: Terminal prompt machine name changed to "new-host" The terminal prompt reads new-host: This morning it's as shown above but the computer name is correct and has not changed. I trashed the terminal preference file and repaired permissions not that I thought it would help and the prompt is still incorrect. How to fix this? Where does the prompt get the computer name from?

How to set the Mac hostname or computer name from the terminal

I presume it should automatically pick it up from the network settings or the computer name under sharing, but both those are correct. And yes, I have rebooted, also no no avail.

I am looking through console logs, but don't see anything obvious yet. Message was edited by: More Less. All replies Drop Down menu. Loading page content.

John'sMacPro, begone!

After a boot into the safe mode and then back to normal, the terminal prompt now reads new-host Routers, switches, Wi-Fi devices, wired connections, etc. If there's both wired and wireless, then that usually either needs to be reconfigured into separate IP subnets with an intervening router, or the Wi-Fi device s should be switched to its access point mode if the Wi-Fi device supports that. I've also occasionally seen this misbehavior with the Bonjour sleep proxies in years past, but whatever was wrong with that was seemingly fixed in some of the now-older Airport and Time Capsule firmware updates.
